Archielagos on Western Road

Alright, so these aren’t the best pictures ever to grace the internet (I only had my phone with me!) but if you are a lover of Mediterranean cuisine-specifically of the Grecian variety-than you must check out Archipelagos on Western Road in Hove. It’s amazing!

Boasting superb service courtesy of the owner and a lovely, intimate ambiance, this is a great place for a date or, as was our case, a nice dinner for a small group. We tried both house wines-actual Greek red and white varietals, and both were pleasant-although I preferred the white, hands down. And after deciding to go splitsies on a few different versions of the meze on offer-seafood, lamb shoulder, and moussaka all featured, respectively-we were bowled over by the seemingly endless amounts of food that came out.  Calamari, hummus, tzatziki, pita, halloumi, giant bowls of delicious Greek salad, and a few other bits and pieces. I had to roll myself out….no big deal.

This place gets all the thumbs up, and if you love Greek food, I highly recommend you check it out! We’ll most definitely be heading back again to get through this dreary winter (and with outdoor seating in the front, a trip in the spring/summer is in the works as well)!

JB’s American Diner on the Brighton Seafront

Just a few blocks down from the Brighton Pier is a hole in the wall restaurant that is easy to miss unless you’re looking for it. JB’s American Diner is only marked by a flat sign on the building, although you may see more people sitting out front if you stroll by on a sunny day – they have room for seating outside!

JB's American Diner, Brighton

Jon and I checked out the place a few weeks ago with some friends for a leisurely Sunday lunch.

Being American myself, I was ecstatic (no exaggerating) just to find a place with some of the admittedly not-so-healthy foods from my homeland. My new guilty pleasure restaurant!

The menu is chock full of the expected American fare: huge burgers and hotdogs, giant portions of fries and onion rings, and yummy milkshakes harking back to the soda counter days of 1950s America.

As you can see, the walls and ceilings are covered with posters of the glamorous old stars – Audrey Hepburn, James Dean, Marilyn Monroe. There are also some…uh…quirky choices in there, like a giant stuffed caterpillar hanging from the wall, and a version of “The Last Supper” starring Batman (of course).

Either way, it adds to the ambiance, and I felt just like I was in an American diner back at home. We ordered a Mexican Burger (filled with jalapeños, guacamole, and salsa), a foot-long chilli hotdog and a side of onion rings, which turned out to be giant. I couldn’t really stomach that much, unfortunately, but it was all the better for Jon and his gaping maw! To keep things as unhealthy as possible, we washed it all down with an Oreo milkshake. As you can imagine, we were stuffed full for the rest of the day!

All in all an enjoyable experience. The food is exactly what you’d expect – huge, well-priced, and full of greasy flavor! Recommended!

Starting a blog on a rainy day

It’s Monday April 9th – Easter Monday, in fact – and the rain is pouring. My good wife Ashley and I have been talking about starting a Brighton blog for a good while. Ninety percent of my professional life is blogging and writing columns, and Ashley has been maintaining a personal blog for more years than I care to recall, so it seems like a natural next step to start blogging about the city in which we both reside and love – Brighton.

On Brightonist we’ll be writing about the many restaurants we eat in, events we attend, shows we watch and other activities we undertake, all well illustrated through Ashley’s photography (and hopefully mine when I get my bloody camera fixed).

For such a vibrant, digitally-savvy city Brighton seems to be spectacularly under-represented in the blogosphere, and we hope our modest contribution can help address that balance.

Things we’re looking forward to doing:

And things we’ve done recently:
